Become a professional or backyard farmer by joining Urban Habitat Chicago for our hands-on organic farming workshops. Experienced ecological designer and urban farmer Michael Repkin will guide you through the most critical topics in organic agriculture and give you the tools to effectively manage your own garden, or optimize your urban farm. For beginning and experienced farmers.

102 INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC FARMING
This course provides participants with the knowledge, skill and ability to grow basic food, fuel and fiber crops. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the idealogy behind the process of organic gardening as well as its environmental importance and implications within our city. Topics include safety, construction, fertilization, introductory plant biology and chemistry, seeding and transplanting, growth and maintenance, and harvesting. This course is the prerequisite for our advanced and seasonal agricultural courses.

Instructor Mike Repkin has 25 years of growing experience, from the Midwest to the Bahamas. He has a background in microbiology from Walter Reed Military Medical Center, and has lectured extensively on environmental topics and human life support – the art and science of restoring a habitable planet.

Series Cost: $94.00 for non-members ; $78.00 for UHC members
