A Gardener’s Christmas Lament
“Twas the thought of the Season and all it entails…
Will I ever be ready?  Just look at my nails…
They’re broken, discolored, my knuckles are green;
I can’t work with gloves on, these hands are obscene!
But. tulips are bedded for color next May,
A dream to be cherished this cold Christmas Day!
There are permanent mud packs on both of my knees,
And I’ve scars on my shinbones from planting small trees;
My face is all peppered with freckles and such,
And my hair is all bleached from the sun; it’s too much
To expect I’ll be lovely when Christmas is near
But, my garden comes first, and there’s always next year!
