Heuchera (Coral Bells) are North American Natives and are available in a range of
shapes and sizes. They are most well-known for their vast rainbow of foliage colors,
but during the past few years breeders have been introducing varieties with an
array of new flower colors! Don’t be fooled by thinking that Coral Bells are only for
the shade, many varieties actually prefer partial shade to full sun (important to
check the label before buying). The biggest challenge to growing Heuchera is
planting the crowns too deep, poor drainage and overwatering. They don’t like
heavy feeding, so use fertilizer sparingly. For best results, make sure to select
varieties that tolerate our heat and humidity! Heuchera are absolutely fantastic in
mixed containers, along the border and in rock gardens.
Heucherella (Foamy Bells) are selected Coral Bells crossed with Tiarella to create
amazing foliage displays with large cut leaves and incredible variegation. Each year
more and more are introduced like Heucherella ‘Sweet Tea’, which has huge
cinnamon colored leaves with an intense orange-colored border. ‘Sweet Tea’ is a
robust plant that performs very well in our summer heat and humidity! Because
Heucherella is bred with Tiarella they can handle the shade and are great
companions with your Hostas and Ferns!
